Article 1
General Provisions
The concept of excellent University Teaching concerns not only interesting and understandable teaching but also teaching that, through multifaceted educational activities, guides, inspires, and broadens students’ horizons and perspectives, while at the same time making them partakers of the academic ethos.
In this context, the Award for Outstanding University Teaching of the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) aims to a) highlight those university teachers who are distinguished for their work by providing high-quality teaching, setting an example for students and teachers and honoring the Democritus University of Thrace and their Department and b) to upgrade the quality of teaching and the adoption of innovative teaching approaches and methods within the framework of student-centered learning in the wider university community.
The award – diploma – is awarded annually by the President of the DUTH at a public ceremony held on a date determined by the Assembly of the Department of Physics.
Article 2
1. Submission of Nominations.
a. Candidates for the Outstanding University Teaching Award of DUTH are faculty members of the Department of Physics of DUTH and other teaching staff who have taught for at least five years in the Department of Physics of DUTH.
b. Candidates are proposed by one or more members of the academic community of the Department of Physics of DUTH (teachers, students, or graduates) who have knowledge of the teaching work of the nominees. Each nomination must be signed, is considered confidential, and may be reviewed in subsequent years.
c. The proposal must include:
i. A CV of the nominee and,
ii. A proposal that will present his/her educational work and document the academic ethos and outstanding ethical behavior of the candidate, worthy of being presented as a model for the students and teachers of DUTH.
d. It is noted that:
-Each proposal submitted concerns only one academic.
-The same academic cannot be awarded a second time.
-The proposals are addressed to the Vice-Rector responsible for academic matters and are filed in the protocol of the Directorate of Academic Affairs.
-The call for proposals is posted until September 15 of each year, with a deadline for sending proposals on October 30. After the submission deadline, no candidacy will be accepted.
-The list of candidacies is kept confidential.
e. The first time these regulations are applied, after their publication, the invitation may be posted and the procedure completed at a later time.
2. Selection Committee
The Selection Committee consists of the Vice President of the Department of Physics of DUTH (as President) and 2 members of the OMEA (after a draw). Members participating in the Committee for the Award for Outstanding University Teaching cannot submit proposals nor be nominated for the award.
3. Selection Procedure
a. The members of the Selection Committee meet in November and study the proposals.
b. A proposal that does not meet the requirements of the previous paragraph is not accepted, and the decision is notified to the proposer(s) by e-mail.
c. Proposals that are accepted proceed to the next stage. Each proposed candidate is informed via a relevant e-mail message that is also notified to the proposer(s), regarding his/her candidacy and submits within a deadline set by the Committee the following:
i) A solemn declaration by which he/she accepts his/her candidacy and, if he/she wishes, ii) a CV or other information in support of his/her candidacy.
d. After collecting the solemn declarations and additional information, the Committee proceeds to evaluate the proposals and selects the candidate whom it proposes to the Senate of DUTH.
e. The evaluation is based on the candidate’s work and, in particular, on his/her contribution to effective, qualitative, and original teaching, on the guidance and support to students in the interconnection of his/her teaching with research and innovation, and on the overall impact he/she has as a University teacher within and outside the University of Thrace.
f. The Committee evaluates the nominations based on the elements:
described in the proposal of the proposers, e-class of the MODIP of the University of Thrace. The candidate must have submitted course and teacher inventory sheets, which are included in the candidate’s CV.
g. The evaluation is completed in December of each year, and the Selection Committee concludes with the nominee for the award. The Committee’s proposal is submitted to the Senate for approval accompanied by a report that is also submitted to the Directorate of Academic Affairs.
h. The Assembly of the Department of the University of Thrace and the academic community of the Department are only informed about the nominee.
Article 3
Award procedure:
1. The award ceremony is organized by the OMEA of the Department of Physics of the University of Thrace in collaboration with the secretariat.
2. The award is made by the President at a special Ceremony that takes place on a date determined by the Assembly of the Department in the presence of the academic community.
Article 4
Posting of the list of awardees
The names of all awardees are posted on the Department’s website.
