The Department of Physics at the School of Sciences of Democritus University of Thrace has adopted a quality policy for the academic unit, which aligns with the revised general policy of Democritus University of Thrace. It aims to ensure the qualitative operation of the Undergraduate Studies Program (USP) by setting specific goals and monitoring their implementation. By receiving feedback from students and staff in the Department, these goals are regularly updated, resulting in continuous improvement in the quality of the USP provided.

Specifically, the quality policy of the Department of Physics at the School of Sciences of Democritus University of Thrace is applied to two axes: the axis that concerns the current operations and services of the Department, and the axis that concerns the Department’s strategic planning.

A. Quality Policy for Current Operations and Services

In this direction, the following is sought:

  • The continuous reform and improvement of the Department’s Undergraduate and Postgraduate Study Programs. In this way, the creation of modern study programs is sought, which, by providing modern basic and specialized knowledge in both theoretical and applied physics subjects, creates a competitive advantage for the Department’s undergraduate and postgraduate graduates, making them equal to graduates of other physics departments. · The improvement of student learning, to increase their level of knowledge, so that they can cope with the high demands of the labor market and of higher (second and third) cycles of studies. For this purpose, the Department of Physics sets as its highest priority the staffing of its Department with high-level scientific personnel and the continuous improvement of its research and educational infrastructure, so that the undergraduate and postgraduate education provided is of a high standard. · Providing information on the level of vocational rehabilitation of its graduates and disseminating vocational rehabilitation information beyond the formal ones to students. · Ensuring, based on the capabilities it has (teaching staff – logistical infrastructure), the appropriate annual number of admissions, so that the Department can offer high-quality education to students. · Quality, at all levels of operation of the Study Program, and at the same time, the Department takes appropriate actions to improve it.
  • Updating the Department’s uPS website to ensure it remains a constantly valid source of information for students.
  • Cutting-edge research conducted primarily by the Department’s faculty members in collaboration with undergraduate students, graduate students and doctoral candidates, in key areas scientific fields of Physics, to be at the level of the requirements of the global research community.
  • The dissemination of research findings is achieved by encouraging participation in international conferences and/or submitting research papers for publication in reputable, internationally recognized scientific journals, by undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as doctoral candidates from the Department. This is usually facilitated and achieved in collaboration with the Faculty members of the Department. · The expansion of the research work carried out in the Department, through the institutionalized research laboratories that it has, and the strengthening of the research groups that are active in the Department.
  • The expansion of collaborations with other Departments of educational institutions at home and abroad, and the improvement and upgrading of the research work produced.
  • The promotion and support of innovation in educational work, through the use of new technologies in education, by utilizing a variety of teaching methods and techniques, with an emphasis on student-centered procedures and methods, and by implementing the institution of the Academic Advisor.
  • The promotion of the Department in Greece and more broadly worldwide, and the creation of a unique profile that distinguishes the Department of Physics at the School of Sciences of Democritus University of Thrace and its graduates from similar higher education departments in Greece, thereby attracting more students.
  • Strengthening the Department’s funding through research programs from public and private bodies and by utilizing alternative sources of funding, such as international programs, self-funded study programs, sponsorships, donations, etc.

B. Quality Policy based on a Strategic Plan

In this direction, the following is sought:

  • Improving the quality of educational work to provide knowledge, skills, and abilities, in accordance with scientific trends, utilizing modern educational approaches, with the digital transformation of the Department’s functions and services to contribute as much as possible. · The promotion of research by strengthening interdisciplinarity, innovation, and the promotion of the results of the research project, through the pursuit of European research and development projects. · The connection with society by developing active links and joint actions with bodies and organizations, as well as by strengthening interaction with the labor market, mainly in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, in which it is the only Department of Physics.
  • The internationalization of the Department involves strengthening its international presence through strategic partnerships with academic, research, and other institutions and organizations abroad, as well as enhancing its visibility. This is achieved by establishing a channel for the exchange of knowledge, technologies, and research potential with international institutions and organizations.
  • Upgrading the University Environment of the Department by improving services to all members of the Academic community. Priority is, of course, given to Student Welfare.
  • Ensuring the quality of the Department of Physics of the School of Sciences of the Democritus University of Thrace, by implementing all quality assurance procedures followed by the University, and subject to inspection and review.
